Moonrocks: Toronto’s Strongest Cannabis, Explained

Ask anyone what the strongest moonrock weed on the menu is and the answer is almost always the same: moonrocks. They’re the heavyweight of cannabis — a single piece can carry the punch of a concentrate while you smoke it like flower. But that potency cuts both ways, and moonrocks are easy to get wrong. This is the complete guide: what they are, exactly how strong, how to smoke them without wasting your money, how much to take, and how they stack up against dabs, hash and sun rocks. Tree Huggerz carries moonrock weed across Toronto and the GTA.

What are moonrocks?

A moonrock is cannabis built in three layers. You start with a nug of cannabis flower, dip or coat it in cannabis oil (a cannabis concentrate, usually hash oil or distillate), then roll the sticky bud in kief — the fine, powdery resin made of trichomes that’s almost pure cannabinoids and terpenes. The result is a single piece that combines all three forms of cannabis: flower, cannabis concentrates and kief. That’s why the potency stacks the way it does. Think of a moonrock as the espresso shot of weed.

The term was popularised by West Coast rapper Kurupt’s “Moonrock” brand, and it’s since become the generic name for any oil-and-kief-coated bud — what most people now call moonrock weed. Almost any strain can be used, though many producers reach for high-THC, resinous cultivars.

How are moonrocks made?

The process is simple in principle: a whole bud is dipped in or brushed with warm cannabis oil so the surface is tacky, then it’s rolled in kief until it’s fully coated, and finally left to dry and firm up. The bud is normally left whole (not ground) so it holds together. The quality of a moonrock comes down to the inputs — good flower, clean oil, and a generous coat of fresh kief — and the curing, which is why two moonrocks can look and hit very differently.

How strong are moonrocks?

This is the headline. Regular cannabis flower in Canada typically tests around 15–30% THC (most day-to-day flower lands in the high teens to mid-20s). Because moonrocks fuse flower with concentrate and kief, moonrock weed commonly tests at 50% THC or higher, with many in the 50–70% range. In practical terms, that’s roughly two to three times the strength of strong flower, delivered in a single hit.

What that means for you: a little goes a very long way. For an experienced smoker, a small piece replaces a whole bowl. For a casual or newer user, the same piece can be overwhelming. Moonrocks are a “start with a crumb” product, not a “pack the bowl” product.

Moonrocks vs. sun rocks, dabs, hash and regular flower

All of these are “more than flower,” but they’re different animals:

  • Regular flower (15–30% THC): the baseline — dried buds, smoked as-is.
  • Hash: compressed resin/trichomes. Stronger than flower, but generally less potent than a moonrock.
  • Dabs (shatter, live resin, distillate): pure concentrate, often up to ~80% THC, vaporised at high heat with a dab rig. Higher raw THC than a moonrock, but you need the gear.
  • Moonrocks (≈50%+ THC): flower + oil + kief, smoked like flower. Concentrate-level strength without a rig — the bridge between flower and dabs.
  • Sun rocks (≈60–80%+ THC): the premium cousin — top-shelf bud dipped in concentrate and coated in pure THC crystalline (no kief). Cleaner-burning and stronger than moonrocks, usually pricier.

If you want the strength of a dab but the ritual of smoking a bowl, moonrocks are the sweet spot. If you want the absolute top of the flower-based ladder, that’s sun rocks.

What do moonrocks feel like?

The high is strong, full-bodied and long. Effects usually begin within a few minutes and build, peaking around the 30-minute mark, so it’s easy to underestimate them early and overdo it. Expect the experience to last roughly 4–6 hours, and longer for less-experienced users — some people report residual effects or a “weed hangover” the next morning, especially after a heavy night session. Because of the depth and duration, most people treat moonrocks as an evening or special-occasion product.

How much should you take?

Less than you think. Because moonrocks can be 2–3× the strength of strong flower, start with a piece about the size of a crumb, take one small hit, and wait a full 10–15 minutes before more — the high keeps climbing after the first hit. Stay hydrated, be somewhere comfortable, and don’t drive or operate anything. If you do go too far, it isn’t dangerous — find a calm spot, hydrate, eat something light, and ride it out; it passes.

How to smoke moonrocks the right way

Moonrocks are sticky and dense, which trips people up. Do it like this:

how to smoke moonrocks
  1. Don’t use a grinder. The oil will gum up the grinder and you’ll lose the kief that makes the moonrock worth it. Break off a small piece with scissors or your fingers instead.
  2. Use a glass piece, not a joint. A bowl or bong supports the dense, sticky chunk and burns it more evenly. Moonrocks don’t stay lit like dry flower, so a pipe is far easier — and better for beginners.
  3. Bed it on regular flower. Pack a bowl of normal flower, set the moonrock piece on top, and press gently. The flower underneath helps it catch and burn steadily.
  4. Low, slow heat. Don’t blast it with a torch — too much heat too fast and it’ll just flame up. Apply gentle heat so it smoulders, then inhale slowly and pace yourself.

Can you put moonrocks in a joint or blunt?

You can, but it’s the harder path — moonrocks don’t burn cleanly on their own and tend to go out. If you want to roll them, break the piece small and mix it through a bed of regular ground flower rather than using moonrock alone. For most people, a glass bowl is simpler and wastes less.

How to store moonrocks

Keep them in an airtight glass container, out of direct light and heat, ideally around 60–65% relative humidity. Handle them as little as possible — every touch knocks off kief, which is the most potent part. Stored properly, moonrocks hold their potency and texture for several months.

Are moonrocks safe?

Moonrocks are strictly for experienced, adult (19+) consumers, and the main risk is simply taking too much, too fast — which leads to an uncomfortable but temporary “greening out” (dizziness, racing heart, anxiety, nausea), not a medical emergency. Respect the potency, dose small, never drive after consuming, and keep them away from anyone underage. If you’re newer to cannabis, edibles or standard flower are a far friendlier starting point.

Where to get moonrocks in Toronto

Because moonrock weed combines three cannabis products in one — flower, concentrate, and kief — it typically costs more per gram than regular flower alone. You’re paying for the premium inputs and the labour of coating and curing each nug, which is why moonrocks sit at the top of the potency-and-price menu.

FAQ

How strong are moonrocks?

Usually 50% THC or more (often 50–70%), versus roughly 15–30% for regular flower — about two to three times stronger.

Are moonrocks stronger than dabs?

Pure dabs can test higher in raw THC, but moonrocks deliver a concentrate-level hit in a smokable form that many find hits harder than expected.

What’s the difference between moon rocks and sun rocks?

Moonrocks are flower plus oil plus kief (about 50%+ THC). Sun rocks use top-shelf bud coated in concentrate and pure THC crystal with no kief, running 60–80%+ THC — stronger and cleaner-burning.

How much of a moonrock should I smoke?

Start with a crumb-sized piece, take one hit, and wait 10–15 minutes before more.

Can you grind moonrocks?

No — grinding ruins them and loses the kief. Break them by hand or with scissors.

How long does a moonrock high last?

Typically 4–6 hours, sometimes longer, with possible next-day residual effects.

Do moonrocks expire?

Not quickly — stored airtight, away from light and heat, they keep their potency for several months.

Can beginners smoke moonrocks?

They can, but it is not recommended. The potency is high; standard flower or a low-dose edible is an easier entry point.
