You can use shatter four ways, and which one is right for you comes down to a single question: what do you already own? A dab rig gives you the cleanest, most controlled result. A joint or a bowl needs nothing you don’t already have. A concentrate pen sits in between, and costs the least in effort. Eating it is the fourth option, and it is the one that works differently from the other three — raw shatter has to be heated before it does anything at all, which is why the infused chews and bars on our menu exist as their own category.
Shatter is a solvent-extracted cannabis concentrate that cools into a hard, amber sheet — translucent enough to read through when it is made well. Snap a corner off a good slab and it breaks like toffee brittle. That texture is the whole reason it earned the name, and it is also the reason handling it is a slightly different skill from handling flower.
The rig route, and why it is still the benchmark
Dabbing is the method every other method gets compared against, because it is the only one that gives you real temperature control. A dab rig is a small water pipe fitted with a quartz banger instead of a bowl. You heat the banger with a butane torch, let it cool for a stretch — this is the part beginners skip — then touch a rice-grain-sized piece of shatter to the surface with a metal dabber and cap it.
The cooling pause is not optional fussiness. A banger heated red and used immediately will scorch the extract, which tastes burnt and destroys the terpenes you paid for. Let it come down and the same dab vaporizes instead of combusting: thicker, whiter vapour, and the strain’s actual flavour survives. If you own a torch and a timer, the timer is the more useful tool.
An e-rig or e-nail removes the guesswork entirely by holding a set temperature, and if you are dabbing more than occasionally it is the single upgrade that changes the experience most. But nothing about the rig route is cheap to start, and for a lot of people the first gram of shatter arrives long before any of that equipment does.
No rig? Three things that work with what is in the drawer
Wrapped into a joint
The oldest trick with a hard concentrate is also the most forgiving. Warm a small piece between your fingers until it goes pliable, roll it into a thin thread, and lay it lengthwise along the flower before you close the paper — or wrap it around the outside of a finished joint and let the paper hold it. Spread thin, it burns with the flower rather than glopping and running. Piled in one spot, it will run, canoe the joint and put a hole in your rolling paper.
This is also the method that most changes what a cheap gram is worth. A thread of shatter through an eighth of mid-tier flower lifts the whole joint rather than giving you one strong pull and a long disappointment.
On top of a bowl
Pack the bowl normally, then place a small piece on top of the ground flower rather than dropping it to the bottom, where it will melt through the screen and into the stem. Light the edge of the bowl, not the shatter itself, and corner your hits. The shatter softens and gets pulled down through the flower as it burns, which is a far better outcome than torching it directly.
In a concentrate pen
Purpose-built concentrate pens have a coil chamber you load a small amount into — no torch, no water, no smell hanging around for twenty minutes. The trade-off is that you are trusting a cheap coil to hit a sensible temperature, and many of them run hot. If you want the convenience without loading anything, a disposable that already contains the extract skips the step entirely. Our Zillionaire Sour Diesel disposable is a shatter-filled 1.1 g device, and the rest of the pen range runs on the same idea.
Eating it is a different thing entirely
Swallowing a piece of raw shatter does approximately nothing, and this catches people out constantly. Fresh extract is mostly THCA — the acid form, which is not intoxicating. Heat is what converts it, which happens automatically the moment you dab, smoke or vape it, and does not happen at all in your stomach. To eat shatter you have to decarboxylate it first in a low oven, then dissolve it into a fat, then bake with that fat. It works, and it is a genuine afternoon of effort with a temperature-sensitive step in the middle.
Which is why the ready-made route usually wins. Euphoria Extractions’ Sativa Shatter Chews come portioned at ten 5 mg pieces per pack, which is a sane place to start if edibles are new to you. At the other extreme, the 1200 mg Indica Milk Chocolate Shatter Bar is a high-tolerance product — a whole bar is not a serving, and the full edibles menu spans both ends of that range. Edibles also take far longer to arrive than anything inhaled, so the cardinal rule holds: take a small amount and wait it out rather than topping up.
What a Southern Ontario winter does to a gram of shatter
Shatter’s texture tracks temperature more obviously than any other concentrate, and the swing between a GTA January and a GTA August is wide enough that the same gram genuinely behaves like two different products.
In the heating season, when forced air has been drying out the house since November, shatter is at its most cooperative for dabbing and its most annoying for everything else. It is properly brittle — it snaps cleanly off the slab, a dab tool picks up a neat shard, and nothing sticks to the parchment. But brittle also means it shatters into fragments you will lose, and the cold makes it stubborn to roll into a thread for a joint. If you want to wrap it, warm the piece in your hand for a minute first; the difference between fingers-cold and fingers-warm is the difference between a thread and a pile of crumbs.
Come the humid stretch from June through August, the same extract slumps into taffy. It will bend rather than break, cling to whatever it touches, and slowly fuse into a single blob if you keep it in a folded parchment. Summer is when the joint and bowl methods get easy and the dab tool starts fighting you. A few minutes in the fridge — not the freezer, where condensation on the way out is the problem — restores the snap long enough to portion it.
The storage principle behind both is the same one that applies to flower: cool, dark, airtight, stable. What changes here is which direction the season pushes. Winter air dries and hardens it; summer humidity softens it and makes terpene loss faster. Parchment paper rather than plastic, in a small airtight container, handles both.
Condo, semi or basement apartment — the method often picks itself
Where you live in the GTA narrows the list faster than any preference does.
In a downtown condo or one of the towers around Square One and Port Credit, an open butane flame near a ceiling-mounted detector in a small, sealed suite is a bad plan, and dab vapour carries into a corridor through the door gap more readily than people expect. That is the situation concentrate pens were made for — no flame, no water to spill, and vapour that dissipates in seconds rather than settling into the furniture.
Older detached and semi stock across Scarborough and the east end gives you options a condo does not: a basement with its own ventilation, a garage, a back step. That is where a rig makes sense — you have somewhere to keep it set up, somewhere to torch safely, and enough separation that smell is not a shared problem. The one caveat is that unfinished GTA basements run cool and damp year-round, so a slab stored down there stays brittle but is more exposed to moisture than it would be two floors up.
Basement apartments and shared houses land in between. One window, limited control over the thermostat, and neighbours through a floor — which usually points at the pen for everyday use and the joint method when you want the flower experience with more behind it.
What is actually on the menu right now
Every product below was in stock when this was written, with prices pulled live from our own menu on 17 September 2026. Sizes are per single unit; most of these also come in multi-packs at a lower per-gram rate.

The Zillionaire shatter rotates through a set of named strains rather than being sold as one — Girl Scout Cookie, Godfather OG, King Louis XIII, Mowie Wowie, Pineapple Express, Strawberry Cough and Super Lemon Haze were the options listed at the time of writing. At $15 for a gram it is also the cheapest way to find out whether you like concentrates at all before committing to any equipment, and the wider concentrates range is where to go once you know.
Dosing it when flower is your reference point
Concentrates strip away the plant material that dilutes flower, so a gram of shatter carries a far larger cannabinoid load than a gram of bud. The practical translation: the amount that looks like “not very much” is usually still too much.
Start with a piece the size of a grain of rice — smaller if you have never dabbed. Inhaled effects arrive within a couple of minutes, so you will know quickly, and there is no benefit to loading a second dab before you do. A tolerance built on flower does not transfer cleanly; plenty of daily smokers find their first proper dab considerably more than they bargained for.
If you are ordering with same-day delivery across Toronto, this is worth planning around. Concentrates are not the thing to try for the first time twenty minutes before you need to be somewhere. And if you find you prefer the flower experience with a bit more behind it, topping a bowl of AAAA flower with a sliver is a far gentler on-ramp than a full dab.

Common questions about using shatter
Do you smoke or eat shatter?
Both work, but not with the same product. Shatter is normally inhaled — dabbed, added to a joint or bowl, or vaporized in a pen. Eating raw shatter does almost nothing, because the THCA in fresh extract needs heat to convert. Edibles made with extract are decarboxylated during manufacturing, which is why they work as sold.
Does shatter get you more high than flower?
Per gram, yes, and by a wide margin — the extraction removes the plant material that makes up most of a bud’s weight. The effect also arrives faster and tends to peak harder. Treat a flower tolerance as no guide at all and start with a grain-of-rice portion.
Can I put shatter in my blunt?
Yes. Warm a small piece until it is pliable, roll it into a thin thread and lay it along the ground flower before rolling, or wrap it around the outside. Keep it spread thin and away from the tip — concentrated in one place it runs, burns unevenly and can hole the wrap.
What is stronger, wax or shatter?
Neither, inherently. They are the same class of extract in different textures — the consistency comes down to how the extract was purged and agitated after extraction, not to potency. Two slabs from the same run can be finished as either. Judge each product on its own lab figures rather than on its form.
Can you smoke shatter in a bowl?
Yes, with one adjustment: place it on top of packed flower rather than directly on the screen, or it melts through into the stem. Light the edge of the bowl and let the shatter soften and get drawn down through the flower as it burns.
How much shatter is one dab?
Roughly a grain of rice, and less than that if it is your first. It looks like an unconvincing amount next to a bowl of flower, which is precisely why people overshoot. You can always take a second; you cannot take less of the first.
